More evacuations despite heavy Sydney rains

More than 1,500 people were evacuated from their homes as a massive blaze threatened three coastal villages south of Sydney today.

The order to leave came just hours after heavy rains doused other wild fires north and west of Australia’s largest city, raising hopes that firefighters could bring an end to the 15-day crisis.
