Man falls into frozen reservoir

A rescue operation was under way today after a man fell into a frozen reservoir in Scotland.

The emergency services were called to Harlaw Reservoir outside Balerno, Edinburgh, around 1.20pm after receiving reports that the man had gone through the ice.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the force's officers were at the scene along with police divers, the ambulance service and the fire brigade.

The incident happened as Scotland continued to be gripped by freezing temperatures.

However the spokesman said the emergency services "had to remain hopeful" as the operation continued.

The area around the reservoir is popular with walkers.
