India and Pakistan edge towards war
The US, seeking to calm rising tensions, wants nuclear rivals India and Pakistan to try to resolve their differences at a conference in Nepal next week, rather than on the battlefield.
The summit of seven South Asian leaders including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of India and President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan will be held in Katmandu.
