Colombia’s crop of coca, the plant used to make cocaine, shrunk by nearly a fourth in 2001, the first full year of a massive US-backed anti-drugs offensive.

Police figures released yesterday said coca under cultivation declined to as little as 308,000 acres, down from last year’s estimate of 402,000 acres.
