Sri Lankan Govt to reciprocate Tamil ceasefire
Sri Lanka’s Government has said it will co-operate with a Christmas ceasefire announced by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam earlier this week.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the Government will reciprocate the rebels’ gesture for the sake of reviving the peace process.
The month-long ceasefire will begin at midnight on Christmas Eve.
The Tamil Tigers have been fighting for an independent Tamil homeland in the north and east of Sinhalese-dominated Sri Lanka for 18 years.
Wickremesinghe’s Government has promised to end the civil war and restart peace talks.
