Relative charged with Trinidad triple murder

An 18-year-old relative has been charged in Trinidad with the murder of a former BBC producer, her brother-in-law and her mother.

Two other people have been detained for questioning.

Daniel Egard, 18, was charged with murdering Lynnette Pearson, 51, her mother Maggie Lee, 83, and her brother-in-law John Cropper, 59.

Police say Egard was Mrs Lee's great-grandson and a grandnephew to the other two victims.

Egard has appeared in court in Port-of-Spain and been remanded in custody.

Bail has not been set and he has not entered a plea. He is to appear in court again later this week.

In the triple murder last week in Port-of-Spain, the three victims were hacked to death before an unknown number of attackers made off with the family vehicle and other valuables. Most of the items from the home have been recovered, but the car has not yet been found.

Mrs Lee had been living in Toronto and Ms Pearson had been living in Port-Vendres, France, but both were Trinidadian. Mr Cropper, a Briton, lived in Trinidad.

Mrs Lee was on holiday in Trinidad and Tobago for two months with her daughter, who was there to work on an independent book project.

Mr Cropper headed the Cropper Foundation, which sponsors workshops for young writers in the Caribbean nation off the coast of Venezuela.
