Pregnant woman dies in Scottish house fire

A pregnant woman died after a blaze swept through a house in the early hours of the morning, fire officials said today.

Emergency operators tried to talk the woman to safety while fire crews went to the burning house in Ratho, near Edinburgh.

The women, 24, was rescued from an upper-floor bedroom but was certified dead later at St John’s Hospital in Livingston.

A two-year-old boy was safe and well after being rescued from the semi-detached council house in Craig Park Avenue.

Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade assistant divisional officer Bob Bertram said emergency services operators had taken the call from the woman.

He said: ‘‘They tried to give her advice but it appears she was trapped in the upper floor and was unable to move.

‘‘You can imagine staff feel upset at what happened.’’

Emergency crews were called to the address at about 2.11am when the upper floor of the house was well alight.
