The Irish community in New York is preparing to remember those killed in the September 11 atrocities, three months to the day after the two airliners slammed into the Twin Towers.

The Irish community in New York is preparing to remember those killed in the September 11 atrocities, three months to the day after the two airliners slammed into the Twin Towers.

The Tanaiste visited the scene yesterday and is due to fly back to Ireland later today. She said that seeing the names of the 343 firefighters lost in the tragedy had made her realise how many young people were lost in the attempt to rescue others.

Many of the names were Irish, she said, bringing home the close connections Ireland has with New York and the full horror of what happened.
