US soldiers engage in first ground attack

US soldiers killed seven Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan last night in their first offensive ground assault since the so-called "war on terrorism" began in October.

According to the US army, three vehicles carrying Taliban troops approached a team of patrolling US soldiers, who called in air strikes and then attacked from the ground.
