Taliban's supreme leader 'living in the back of cars'

The Taliban's supreme leader is reportedly living out of the back of cars to avoid being caught.

A friend of Mullah Mohammed Omar's driver, Said Mohammed, says he also spends little time in one place.

He says Mullah Omar is using a variety of cars, trucks and lorries to hide from US forces.

The Daily Telegraph call the man 'Mahmudullah' to protect him from retribution by the Taliban. They say he's fleeing Kandahar with his family.

He claims to have seen Mullah Omar in a car, speaking on a walkie-talkie.

"I saw him on Saturday," he says. "He was travelling with only one bodyguard because he didn't want to stick out. I often know where he is because his driver is a good friend."

He adds: "He no longer even stays in a house. At night he sleeps for three or four hours before ordering the driver to move on. During the day he visits the troops to keep morale high."

While some sources say anti-Taliban forces are close to capturing Kandahar, Mahmudullah told the paper: "Mullah Omar has a force of about 500 pick-up trucks, each packed with soldiers. They are very tough and disciplined and some have been fighting for 25 years."
