Marines patrol near Taliban stronghold

US Marines were today patrolling the desert near the Taliban’s last stronghold after Afghan warriors said they would take the airport then seize the city itself.

The situation at Kandahar comes amid raised hopes of a breakthrough in the stalled talks on the political future of the country after the Northern Alliance said it was prepared to hand over power to a transitional government.
