A British oil worker was shot dead while driving in Nigeria, the Foreign Office said tonight.

A British oil worker was shot dead while driving in Nigeria, the Foreign Office said tonight.

David Gillan, 38, was killed in his car in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

No motive for his killing has yet been established.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman tonight said: ‘‘We understand that he was shot whilst in his car but we are awaiting police reports.

‘‘Our consular staff are in contact with the family and offering them support and advice.’’

Mr Gillan was originally from Scotland but recently lived and worked in the African country with his family.

He worked for a company specialising in equipment used in the oil business. He was married with two children.
