Three thousand US soldiers are conducting war games in the desert near the Iraqi border, sending a message to Baghdad that Washington remains committed to defending Kuwait despite its war in Afghanistan.

The manoeuvres, code-named Desert Spring, were scheduled before the US campaign on terrorism started, but the number of soldiers involved in them has been increased, the US Embassy said today.
