Israel withdraws from Jenin after six-week invasion

Israel has pulled its forces out of the West Bank town of Jenin, the last of six Palestinian towns invaded last month following the assassination of Tourism Minister Rehavam Zeevi.

Israel invaded the six towns on October 18 in revenge for the assassination.

It claimed that its presence was necessary to stop further Palestinian attacks on Israel.

In a statement released this morning, Israel said it has now withdrawn to the outskirts of Jenin, from where a spokesman said it can "continue to protect the security of the citizens of Israel".
