A ban on human cloning in Britain has moved a step closer today after emergency legislation was cleared by the House of Lords.

In the wake of the revelation by US scientists that they had cloned a human embryo - branded as ‘‘morally wrong’’ by President George W Bush - peers gave the go-ahead to the proposed ban. The legislation will be debated by MPs in the Commons on Thursday.
