Soldiers accused of throwing student to his death in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwean soldiers have been accused of throwing a student off a moving train to his death because he supported the leading opposition party.

A passenger on a train bound for the eastern border city of Mutare said soldiers tried to strangle Lameck Chemvura, 20, with a shoelace.

He said they then threw the political science student from Harare off the train.

A police spokesman said Chembura's body was recovered next to the railway line. He said he was unaware of any arrests in the case.

Samson Makuwaza, a passenger on the train, told the independent Daily News that soldiers first accused passengers of supporting the opposition party Movement For Democratic Change.

"It was a nightmare. Women and children started crying as they were kicked, searched, molested and beaten up," he told the newspaper.
