Rugova's party wins Kosovo elections
Ibrahim Rugova’s Democratic League for Kosovo has won the Serbian province’s first democratic elections since NATO drove Serb forces out of the area in 1999.
The DLK won 46% of the vote, with its rival, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, securing 25.5 %.
A coalition of Serb parties won 11% of the vote, while a small ethnic Albanian party won 7.8%.
Although the issue of independence was not on the ballot, many ethnic Albanians saw the vote as a step towards eventual secession from Yugoslavia.
