British defence secretary Geoff Hoon is due to step up the UK’s commitment to the European Union’s ‘‘Rapid Reaction Force’’ at talks in Brussels today.

The British government has already offered 12,500 front-line troops, 18 warships and 72 combat aircraft, ready at short notice to join EU humanitarian relief, peacekeeping and crisis management missions anywhere in the world.
