France today sent its first contingent of troops to northern Afghanistan as part of an international effort to help secure the area for humanitarian aid workers.

France today sent its first contingent of troops to northern Afghanistan as part of an international effort to help secure the area for humanitarian aid workers.

A total of 58 French soldiers were due to arrive in the northern Afghanistan city of Mazar-e-Sharif over the weekend after flying via Turkey and Uzbekistan, a Defence Ministry spokesman said.
