Turbulence blamed for US air crash

Data from the black box recorder in the American Airlines plane which crashed in New York this week seems to support the theory that the plane encountered wake turbulence before plummeting to the ground.

The Airbus A300 apparently twice ran into tornado-like turbulence left by a Japan Airlines jumbo jet which had used the same flight path just minutes before the crash.

The second time the AA plane hit the turbulence, it veered sideways before smashing into Queens, killing 265 people.
