In the hours before Taliban forces abandoned Kabul at dawn today, trucks loaded with cheering refugees competed for road space with jubilant opposition fighters moving south after a series of victories against the Taliban in northeastern Afghanistan.

As the Taliban retreated from the Afghan capital, northern alliance forces moved into the city from the north and occupied military compounds held only hours earlier by the Islamic militia.
