British troops ‘played significant part in advance’

British troops played a ‘‘very significant’’ part in the rapid advance of the Northern Alliance forces across Northern Afghanistan, Geoff Hoon, Defence Secretary, said today.

Mr Hoon confirmed at the weekend that British troops, believed to be mainly from the SAS, were now on the ground liaising with the opposition forces and advising them on how to move forward.
