Three policemen injured in Tamil Tiger suicide attack

A suspected Tamil Tiger suicide bomber has killed himself and injured three Sri Lankan policemen in an attack near the town of Batticaloa today.

The bomber threw himself onto a police jeep, but his apparent target, the local police chief, escaped unhurt.

The police chief has been at the forefront of a crackdown on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who have been fighting for an independent homeland in Sri Lanka for 18 years.

Today’s attack followed an escalation in fighting between government soldiers and rebels in the north, where most of the country’s civil war has been fought.
