A car bomb exploded in Madrid shortly after 9am (8am Irish time) in a street where the official car of the Secretary General of Scientific Policy, Juan Junquera, was parked.

A car bomb exploded in Madrid shortly after 9am (8am Irish time) in a street where the official car of the Secretary General of Scientific Policy, Juan Junquera, was parked.

A total of 61 people were injured in the explosion.

Four people are described as 'seriously injured'.

Just after the explosion, a passerby alerted police to two men who were running from the scene.

Police reached the man and woman and apprehended them at Forment St.

Both had pistols in their possession and were taken into custody, where they were searched.

False identification cards and wigs were also found on their persons.

Spain's Interior Minister, Mariano Rajoy, has confirmed that both suspects belong to ETA.
