The Japanese government today said it expected the resumption of limited commercial whaling to be approved in May next year at an international meeting in Japan. The statement drew immediate criticism.

Joji Morishita, an official with Japan’s Fisheries Agency, said that experts brought together by the International Whaling Commission recently in Cambridge, England made advances toward resuming commercial whale hunting.
