American ground troops in Afghanistan

A ‘‘modest’’ number of American troops are on the ground in Afghanistan, US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld confirmed tonight.

During a joint news conference with Britain’s Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon at the Pentagon in Washington, Mr Rumsfeld said the United States did not rule out a more extensive ground troop operation.
