Eleven could be final death toll in tunnel crash

Police believe the final death toll in the Gotthard tunnel crash could be eleven.

More than 20 people are still listed as missing but police, say there are probably no further bodies in the tunnel.

He says nothing has been found of the driver of the truck believed to have caused the crash and it is possible he escaped, which would reduce the death toll to 10.

Previously police said the driver had been unable to flee because he was pinned in his cab between the wall of the tunnel and another truck

"We found almost nothing in the cab," said Chief of Police Romano Piazzini.

He says they will have to wait for forensic experts to search for DNA traces of the driver, who was identified only as a Turkish citizen driving a load of insulation in a Belgian-registered truck.

Police said it is possible the driver had reached safety and failed to report to authorities, perhaps because he was in a state of shock.

Piazzini said investigators had accounted for each of the 23 vehicles remaining in the tunnel.

The 10 bodies recovered have each been linked to the vehicle the were traveling in. All the remaining vehicles were being driven by people who reached safety.

Safety experts have tested soot and dust for poisons, delaying the entrance of forensic experts to search for remains of victims.
