Mars Odyssey goes for first dip into atmosphere

Nasa’s Mars Odyssey spacecraft headed for its first brush with the martian atmosphere early today, a surf along the upper fringe of the atmosphere less than 100 miles above the planet’s surface.

The goal of the manoeuvre was to tighten the spacecraft’s orbit around the Red Planet.
