A minor earthquake shook the New York City area early today, a monitor for the US Geological Survey said.

A magnitude-2.6 earthquake hit lower Manhattan at about 1.42am (0742 Irish time), said Dr John Ebel, director of the Weston Observatory at Boston College, which monitors seismic activity.
