British backbencher slams imperialist war in Afghanistan
A British Labour Party backbencher in the Welsh Assembly has condemned the ongoing attacks on Afghanistan, saying they are only being carried out to perpetuate Western imperialism in Third World countries.
Richard Edwards said that throughout the developing world, the West stands for “dictatorship, bondage and human exploitation” and warned that the US-led military campaign will only create more terrorists.
He said Osama bin Laden’s al Qaida network targeted the United States on September 11 because the West continues to deny human rights to Third World populations.
Mr Edwards said modern Western democracy is “buttressed by a rotten clientele of despots and oligarchies who police and brutalise their people to be benefits of Western multi-nationals like the oil companies”.
In a vehement attack on the US and British Governments, he said: “We have to seriously question whether military onslaught by the richest country on the planet on just about the poorest will really rid the world of terrorism.”
Several observers have suggested that the only reason the US is attacking Afghanistan is to gain control of oil supplies in the Caucasus region, the last major untapped oil reserve on the planet.
