Latvian judge assassinated in Riga

A top Latvian judge who presided over several high-profile criminal trials was assassinated outside his apartment in the capital, Riga, yesterday.

69-year-old Janis Laukroze was shot seven times, becoming the first judge to be murdered since the country regained independence from the Soviet Union 10 years ago.
