Six police officers have died after their small plane crashed while they were on their way to investigate a road accident that claimed 22 lives in northern Chile.

Six police officers have died after their small plane crashed while they were on their way to investigate a road accident that claimed 22 lives in northern Chile.

The drama began when a chartered bus taking 40 workers to a copper mine near Calama collided with a lorry carrying sacks of cement.

19 of the bus passengers and three people in the lorry died in the crash. A plane carrying specialist investigators was then dispatched to the area but it crashed on the way, despite the fact that visibility was good.

Police are currently investigating both incidents.
