Bush says strikes went to plan

The post of Director of Homeland Security has been created in the US in response to the September 11 attacks.

As Tom Ridley was sworn in, President Bush said America would be prepared to respond effectively in the event of any future terrorist attacks.

He said the strikes on Afghanistan had been executed as planned.

He paid tribute to those involved in the war on terrorism including the intelligence agencies.

"We have the best intelligence network, not only to protect ourselves but to bring the evil doers to justice," he said.

He said the US would be relentless in its bid to bring them to justice and people must understand this is going to be a long war.

Mr Ridley is the former governor of Pennsylvania.
