Salvage crews have begun raising the wreck the of Kursk nuclear submarine from the bottom of the Barents Sea, more than a year after the vessel sunk following an on-board explosion.

The submarine is being lifted on steel cables and the Russian Vice Admiral overseeing the operation said he expects it to be towed to shore by noon.

The Kursk sank during a training exercise in August 2000, with the loss of all 118 crew members.
