Fears grow for British journalist

Fears are growing for the safety of a British journalist arrested in Afghanistan by the ruling Taliban.

Yvonne Ridley, a 43-year-old mother of three was detained yesterday, according to the Taliban’s press agency.

Ms Ridley was wearing traditional Afghan dress and was not carrying any travel documents.

She has been in the area since the attacks on the US on September 11.

Diplomatic efforts are underway to secure the journalist’s freedom.

Concerns about her safety have been fuelled by the treatment of eight foreign missionaries who have been sentenced to death by the fundamentalist Taliban militia.
