Trade Centre ruin likely to form memorial

The last piece of the World Trade Centre to be pulled down looks certain to be preserved as a memorial.

The seven-storey ruin, which is all that remains of the 110-storey South Tower, was demolished on Wednesday.

New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani says its removal would make recovery efforts safer and easier, but it was likely the structure would form part of a lasting memorial.

He said: "We're going to preserve as much of that wall as possible,".

Philippe de Montebello, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, called the South Tower wreckage "a searing fragment of ruin" and said it should be preserved at the 'ground zero' site.
