Authorities in New York were today preparing to issue the first death certificates for people reported missing in the wreckage of the World Trade Centre.

The move will allow families to claim on insurance policies and make financial arrangements instead of facing a waiting period of up to seven years before loved ones can be officially declared dead as missing persons.
