Israel and Palestine have observed a tentative ceasefire declared yesterday in an effort to restart peace talks and restore calm to the Middle East.

The Israeli army has not reported any fighting since midnight on Tuesday, suggesting that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has succeeded in convincing militant groups to honour the truce.
