Arafat calls ceasefire

The Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has called a unilateral ceasefire and in response, Israel ordered its troops to pull out of all Palestinian-controlled territory.

The Palestinian ceasefire will operate on all fronts, Mr Arafat told foreign diplomats earlier today. His troops have been ordered to hold fire and use maximum restrain ‘even in self defence’.
