Two trains collide in Utah
An Amtrak passenger train collided with a freight train near Wendover, Utah,
today.
As emergency crews rushed to the scene, there were reports that one of the
trains was on fire.
Witness reports also said one of the trains had been pushed off the tracks,
but there were no details about which of the trains was derailed.
The Amtrak train was headed for Oakland from Chicago and is believed to have
had 200 passengers on board.
The passenger train is also believed to be crowded due to the closure of airports across the country following the national ground stop that has been in effect since Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
A spokesman for LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City said the hospital had activated a "mass casualty plan." He declined to provide details of deaths or casualties.
The spokesman also said the hospital had sent its helicopter Life Flight to
the scene.
Wendover is in west-central Utah near the border with Nevada.
