After an Israeli helicopter attack on Palestinian militants and a reprisal by gunmen, Palestinians are downplaying prospects for truce talks next week between Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.

Speaking last night in Italy, where he and Arafat are to attend a conference, Peres said he expected to meet the Palestinian leader.
