At least three people are feared dead and some 40 others injured after a passenger plane crash landed in Malaga.

Police say several of the passengers are still trapped inside the plane.

The plane was arriving from Morocco when reports say it landed on a road some 200 metres short of the airport runway.

There is an unconfirmed radio report that the main body of the plane broke in half when it crashed on national highway N340.

Firefighting are at the scene of the accident.

The plane, with 41 passengers and three crew aboard, was travelling from Melilla, a Spanish enclave on the northern Moroccan coast.

It belongs to the Spanish Binter Mediterraneo airline, a subsidiary of national airline Iberia.
