Israeli tanks launch night attack on village

Israeli tanks rolled into a Palestinian village on the southern fringes of Jerusalem today, killing a Palestinian, in an effort to halt persistent gunfire raining on a nearby Jewish neighbourhood.

The night-time advance into the village of Beit Jalla was the latest in a series of violent events that had stretched through yesterday and cranked up tensions in the bloody Middle East conflict.
