Caribbean storm threatening hurricane status

Caribbean tropical storm, ‘Chantal’, is threatening to develop into a hurricane as it makes its way towards Mexico.

Meteorology experts say the storm may reach the Yucatan peninsula by tonight.

The storm has already hit small islands in the Caribbean and generated a lightning storm that killed two brothers in Trinidad.

The storm could hit land anywhere along the 200-mile coastline between Belize and Cancun, Mexico.

“It’s not well organised,” said Richard Pasch of the US National Hurricane Centre. “If it survives the next 12 hours or so, conditions would be favourable for it to strengthen into a hurricane.”

Tropical storms achieve hurricane status at 74mph.
