Dead Alps climber named

The Foreign Office has confirmed the name of a 40-year-old Briton killed in a climbing accident in the Swiss Alps.

Owen Taylor, from Derby, was in a group of four climbing the Grand Comdin de Valsorey mountain, in the Sion region of Switzerland, when he was hit by falling rocks.

The accident happened just over three weeks ago, on Friday 13, but Mr Taylor's name has only just been confirmed.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "He was in a roped party of four. They had arrived at the top of the Meitin glacier at an altitude of 3,500m. They were surprised by a rock fall. The man leading the party was hit and seriously injured.

"A rescue team rushed to the scene and despite their rapid involvement the mountaineer succumbed to his injuries".
