'Exhausted' Carey posts website messages

Exhausted singer Mariah Carey told her own website she did not ‘‘know what’s going on with life’’ before checking into hospital, it emerged today.

The American star admitted herself to hospital late on Wednesday, suffering from ‘‘extreme exhaustion’’, and was today said to be resting.

But just before she sought treatment, she put a series of messages on her own website saying ‘‘I just can’t trust anyone’’ and complained that nobody gave her any time off.

‘‘Basically all I really wanna say is I don’t know what’s going on with life,’’ the website said.

‘‘I’m trying to understand things in life right now and so I really don’t feel that I should be doing music right now.

‘‘But I just can’t trust anybody any more right now because I don’t understand what’s going on. And I don’t know if that makes any sense to anybody. I’m gonna be taking some time off.’’

The singer also left a message for Nancy Berry, the head of Virgin Records, the label which signed her earlier this year in a £16 million-an-album deal, on the website.

‘‘I’d like to say Nancy, I will record and stuff, it’s just that I needed some time off but nobody was really giving it to me,’’ she wrote.

‘‘And I feel that that’s only because of the situation that we’ve been dealing with for awhile. I worked it into a bad place.

‘‘What I’d like to do is just a little break or at least one night of sleep without someone popping up about a video or thing where all I really want to do is just be me and that’s what I should’ve done in the first place.

‘‘So if anybody gets that that really cares, just do me a favour, close the management company down that I own and I’m gonna lie here and wait for that to happen.’’

Carey’s spokeswoman said the messages had been removed from the website.

‘‘Mariah was not thinking clearly when she left them. But Virgin is extraordinarily supportive and only want the best for her,’’ said the spokeswoman.

Carey has now cancelled her next scheduled public appearance, at MTV’s 20th birthday celebrations in New York next week.

‘‘We don’t know how long she will be in hospital,’’ said the spokeswoman.

The singer was said to be ‘‘exhausted’’ by the effort of making two films and her latest album.

There had been speculation her three-year romance with Latino singer Luis Miguel was foundering after reports linked Carey with notorious white rapper Eminem earlier this month.

But the spokeswoman said the insomnia which Carey last week disclosed she suffered from may have been part of the problem and said: ‘‘I am sure that definitely has something to do with it.’’

She had been undertaking a whirlwind promotional tour, which included a trip to London last week, for her new album, Glitter, which is the soundtrack to her first film, also Glitter, which is due to be released in America at the end of August.

The film tells the story of a young girl who dreams of becoming a star and is based on Carey’s own life story, while her other film, crime drama Wise Girls is due to be released next year.
