Philippine volcano erupts for second time

The Mayon volcano in the central Philippines has erupted for the second time in a month, forcing thousands of residents living in nearby towns and villages to flee to evacuation centres.

Rumbling could be heard as far as six miles away as the volcano spewed a 200-foot fountain of lava and forced ash clouds six miles into the air.

After last month's eruption, 50,000 residents were forced to flee 18 villages at the volcano's foot.

Witnesses said today's activity appeared more violent than the June 24 eruption.
