Italian police have fired tear gas at anti-globalisation protestors in the first outbreak of violence ahead of this weekend's summit of G8 leaders in Genoa.

Protestors wearing masks have reportedly broken windows and set fire to a bank near the 13-foot high barriers that have erected around the city centre.
