Man indicted over Liberty Bell attack

A US grand jury in Philadelphia has indicted a man who allegedly struck the Liberty Bell with a sledgehammer.

It is alleged that Mitchell Guilliatt, 27, dented the 249-year-old American symbol of freedom.

He has been charged with attempting to injure federal property and defacing an archaeological resource as a result of the incident on April 6.

He faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Guilliatt will stay at his mother's house in Boise, Idaho, and must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet while on bail.

A National Park Service ranger tackled Guilliatt after he allegedly pulled the sledgehammer from a backpack and hit the cracked bell while yelling: "God lives."
