Foot-and-mouth spreads to Greater Manchester

The first outbreak of foot-and-mouth in Greater Manchester has been confirmed.

Almost 50 cattle at Chadwicks Farm in Wigan have been slaughtered and Government vets have imposed control measures on surrounding farms.

The area had until now remained untouched by foot-and-mouth but the alarm was raised when symptoms of the disease were spotted in the animals.

Vets are assessing whether adjoining premises have been affected.
